Madonna dei vetrai

Madonna dei vetrai

Inspired by a medieval English stained-glass window, the “Madonna dei Vetrai” is a tribute by the artist to a style that is not easy to interpret. The face and neck of the Virgin are merged into a single element that is striking for its stylistic modernity, almost as Picasso. She holds in her hand a jar with ointments, the one that Magdalene will bring to the Deposition, a symbol of the sacrifice of her son. He has an apple in his hand, because it is her fruit, and the apple is also a symbol of the original sin of the first man, and he became man: he touches the apple because he became incarnate, but he is without sin. Being an image inspired by an ancient stained-glass window, the artist dedicated this work to his art, which is why he titled it “The Madonna dei vetrai”. Above, on the left, the patron saint of Murano glassmakers, San Nicolò and, on the right, the coat of arms of the Magnificent Community of Murano.
